December, 1994: COMGENIE is a set of TLI's for SoftPLC that provides powerful serial communications capabilities. Using COMGENIE instructions, SoftPLC can easily communicate to robots, bar code readers, chart recorders, and other process instrumentation that utilizes ASCII or binary serial RS-232-C, RS- 422 or RS-485 communications.
With COMGENIE, SoftPLC can be easily programmed to read information from devices into its datatable or send datatable information to devices through the SoftPLC's COM ports. COMGENIE is included with SoftPLC at no additional cost. With COMGENIE, users have found that a few rungs of ladder and an easily configured string table can replace hundreds of rungs of A-B PLC-5 ASCII string instruction programming!
When COMGENIE is loaded, it loads a string table, which is a read-only array of strings used solely as format specifications. You create the string table offline with any text editor. Strings can be up to 255 characters long, numbered from 1 up to 30,000. COMGENIE currently supports 36 ports, each of which has separate input and output buffers.
